Secretary's News 27th February 2019

Member Announcement

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of former member Mrs Judy Pentreath, who died on Sunday 24th February 2019. Her funeral will take place on Saturday 16th March at 11.30am at Littlebredy Church, Dorset, DT2 9HH.

New Members

The following are welcomed as new or returning members this month:

  • Mr Adrian Bolton
  • Mrs Elizabeth Farquhar (Re-instatement)
  • Mr Maxwell Paul
  • Mrs Julia Sheard (Re-instatement)

Bar Rebuild Update

The exterior of the Club’s impressive new bar structure is now almost complete, save for the addition of external aluminium flashings and the curved top windows at either end. The first fits of plumbing and electrics have been carried out, and both the ceiling and interior dwarf walls were plasterboarded last week so dry lining could begin this week.

Please save the date of Saturday 30th March for the Grand Opening of the new bar for members. We hope you will join us from 6pm to watch the newly inaugurated Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, member Mrs Susie Sheldon DL, cut the ribbon and officially declare the new bar open. The evening will continue with supper and jazz for those who would like to stay on. Further information will be available soon on the Event Calendar.

Clubhouse Maintenance

The Club’s Boatman Adam, ably assisted by Josh, has done a great job re-painting the south façade of the Clubhouse and it now shines brightly in the spring sunshine. The underside of the colonnade is due to be painted in the next fortnight.

The first stage of work to improve rainwater drainage on the west extension has recently been completed. An additional drainpipe has been added on the south side to channel water from the roof down to ground level; water ingress beneath paving slabs on the north side has been remedied and the rotten fascias and soffits on the first floor have been repaired.

Sailing Secretary

As a result of interviews held last week, Jeremy Willcock has been appointed as the Royal Solent's Sailing Secretary as of 1st March 2019. We hope you will join us in welcoming him to this new role within the Club.

2019 Cruising Programme

The Cruising Group’s ‘Out to Lunch’ Programme for this year can be viewed on the Club’s website in the online Event Calendar – to view now, please click here.

The programme kicks off with a ‘Start of Season Cruising Lunch’ on Tuesday 26th March, with a talk by member Alan Roffey-Jones entitled ‘Boats, Boardrooms & Boots’. To view more information or to book online please click here, or sign up via the list in the foyer.

Future Events

Following an enhancement to the Club’s website today, we are now able to more easily list future events in our online Event Calendar before we have all the details to share. Hopefully this will help members to better save the dates for future events. This new section appears at the end of our Event Calendar and will be continuously updated – click here to view.
