Project Description
The old timber shed in which the Boatmen currently work is in a poor state of repair and not water tight. Therefore, the existing east shed building with it’s block walls is being refurbished to provide new weatherproof facilities for the Club’s Boatmen before the onset of winter.
Project Timeline
Local building firm, Acorn Interiors, commenced work on Monday 21st August and it is estimated that the project will be completed within 6 – 8 weeks.
Project Cost
The cost of the renovation work is £60,000.
Project Funding
It is aimed to raise as much money as possible through member donations and fundraising events, topped up by the Club’s reserves, which will help ensure that the reserves are maintained at a reasonable level for a “rainy day”.
Member Donations
In response to the Vice Commodore’s recent emails about this essential Club project (please view via the Email Archive), an increasing number of members are generously donating funds.
If you would like to join them in contributing to the funding for this project there are 3 methods by which to do so:
- Contact the front office and request that your donation is taken from your Club payment card, or
- Submit a bank transfer to: Royal Solent Yacht Club, sort code 30-95-99, account number 02229231. Please use “East Shed Fund” as the reference,
or
- Submit a cheque, payable to Royal Solent Yacht Club. Please write “East Shed Fund” on the back of the cheque.
Monetary donations from members for the East Shed Fund currently stand at £13,152.
Fundraising Events
To further boost fundraising, the Club held two fundraising events – a live auction in October and a silent auction and lucky dip in November. With 10% of the funds raised also going to Parkinson’s IOW.
Live Auction – Friday 20th October
Our live auction was a great success with a fantastic atmosphere, attended by over 50 members and featuring 22 fantastic lots kindly donated by members and suppliers.
A grand total of £11,525 was raised, with £10,373 going to the East Shed Fund and £1,152 (10%) going to Parkinson’s IOW.
Silent Auction – Friday 24th November
The silent auction was also well attended, with many bids placed during the two weeks prior and great excitement regarding the lucky dip which raised £110 on the evening.
A grand total of £5,920 was raised, with £5,328 going to the East Shed and £592 to Parkinson’s IOW.
Total Funds Raised – 2nd January 2024
The total funds raised total £29,515 (net) which equates to 49% of the total £60k project cost and ensures that the RSYC reserves remain at a safe level.
The total includes monetary donations (£13,704), the Live Auction (£10,373 net), the Silent Auction (£5,328 net) and Lucky Dip (£110). Additionally, we have donated 10% (£1,744.50) of the gross auction funds raised to Parkinson’s IOW.

Thank you so much to everyone for your support of this key fundraising initiative for the Club.
The names of all the members who have donated to the east shed fund, whether through monetary donations or by donating or winning the auction lots, will be displayed on a plaque that will be mounted on the wall of the new east shed workshop.
Please note that the fundraising effort for the east shed refurbishment closed at the end of 2023.
